BY COUNCILLOR DERRICK MURPHY

The talk will encompass the establishment of the first permanent English settlement in North America, at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. It will deal with aspects of early English settlement such as the motives behind the establishment of the settlement, the reasons for its survival, interaction with the Native Americans of Tidewater Virginia and the myth and reality surrounding Pocahontas.

As you no doubt know Pocahontas married John Rolfe of Heacham. Together they had the first English / Native American child.
